Assistant Secretary of the Army (Financial Management and Comptroller) John Whitley met with key leaders at the United States Army Financial Management Command and Defense Finance and Accounting Service here Wednesday in his first visit to the command’s headquarters since being confirmed to the position of ASA (FM&C) last September.
Whitley is responsible for resourcing the Army through sound financial management and comptrollership, from budget formulation to auditable financial statements.
“Mr. Whitley's initial visit to USAFMCOM provided us a great opportunity to lay out the command's mission of providing enterprise-wide financial management support to the Army,” said Maj. Gen. David Coburn, the commanding general of USAFMCOM. “We were able to highlight the command’s value added to the Army and provide a roadmap to our future growth.”
“It was great to see first-hand and learn about the significant progress USAFMCOM has made since first becoming a Direct Reporting Unit and under Maj. Gen. Coburn’s command – all of which was recently highlighted by their unit patch ceremony,” Whitley said. “As USAFMCOM takes on additional responsibility and strives for even greater gains standardizing and improving business processes, transitioning military pay, sustaining audit, and developing in-house capabilities and concepts, this visit made me confident they will continue to represent themselves proudly and to consistently deliver outstanding results.”
During the visit Whitley also received an overview of the DFAS support to the Army from Greg Schmalfeldt and Paul Gass, the director and deputy director of DFAS-Indianapolis, “to see first-hand the tremendous working relationship we have,” Coburn said.
USAFMCOM provides finance support and liaison to Army commands, component commands, Direct Reporting Units, installations, and tactical units, as well as to the Defense Finance and Accounting Service, on matters pertaining to the adequacy of finance policies, systems, and reporting requirements. The command also performs Army-wide financial management and unit training, E-commerce, and classified finance and accounting.
